Also known as ‘HOLY SHIT NATHAN FILLION IS IN OTTAWA’. Swiftly followed by ‘Nathan Fillion got an awful eye infection… right after OCC. oops.’
OCC is kind of my home-base con. It’s ten minutes away from the house I grew up in, so it’s easy to get to and significantly cheaper travel and lodgings wise. On the other hand, it’s really heavily based on merchandizing, which while really cool to look at, doesn’t appeal to me as much. I’m cheap, what can I say?
I know this is a bit late, but family stuff and Anime North Prep got in the way. (look for that post later this week).
So here’s the deal: I’ve got this thing that kind of gets in the way of Cons but facilitates them. It’s called work, and the people in charge frown when I’m not there. So while the Con officially started at 2pm on Friday, I only got there after work, around 6, or 6:30.
Luckily, that meant I missed the massive pre-reg line from last year. I made it inside in time to catch the tail end of Melting Mirror’s and Kudrel’s “Cosplay on a Budget” panel, and spent the rest of the day wandering around dressed as Ke$ha-Danaerys. It was pretty awesomely comfortable and a nice booth immediately recognized me as the ‘book’ Dany, and wanted a photo of me wearing their dragon tooth necklace.
I would post it, but I forgot to get their contact info. Whoops!
Having learned my lesson from GAnime, I woke up, put on things that vaguely resembled clothes, and headed over to register for the Masquerade. OCC lets about a third of the entries register online ahead of time, but I wasn’t sure if I’d be done by then so I waited until day of.
I got there at 9:30, and waited in line until the registration table was ready at 10….fifteen. (Computer trouble). Success! Now registered, I was free to go hang out with family for an early mother’s day until green room time.
My niece is the shit. Just sayin’.
I missed out on the majority of Saturday’s con-activities between the family time and waiting around in the green room.
After a bit of adjusting and pinning armor in place I made a successful Masquerade debut. No armor melted or anything! (take that, Demon Hunter). Then I went home, took off the corset and enjoyed breathing for a while.
Sunday was pretty lazy, which was nice. I didn’t wear a full steampunk outfit like I’d planned, and instead just wore Wendy’s jacket and the Dany jewelry, claiming I was a pirate. Lots of people liked it, I guess. Geekxgirls put a photo of me up on their facebook so hooray!
Sunday was also the Masq results. I won Best Detailing in Journeyman. Yeaah! I didn’t have much time to relax though, AN was right around the corner.
Check out an update for that con later this week.
