2017 – 2018: Making the Cut

I’ve written and re-written this 2017 retrospective about four times now. It keeps coming out too negative, so I’ll focus on the future instead of the last year (which has been a trash fire. A transformative trash fire, but still a trash fire). Basically, 2017 boils down to me realising that I’m not fulfilled without being creative.I’ll still be making and sewing and posting about it, but the frequency will be intermittent on the blog. For more timely updates you can check out my insta (bonus cat pics) or twitter (bonus shit posting).

I’ve been working on a new project for the last month and a half that I’m really excited about. It’s not cosplay, but it’s inspired by my love of design and sewing and also the ridiculous over-the-top-ness that Cosplay has in abundance.

‘Making the Cut’ is an interactive novel that lets you investigate alongside the main character:

After a bungled case, Probationary Special Agent Rosalyn Hart must prove to herself and to her superiors at the C.R.I.M.E. Agency that she’s worth keeping in the field. This case is her Last Chance and if she fails not only will a murderer walk free, but Ros will be doomed to paper work for the rest of her career.

Making the Cut is about how fashion can be uplifting and toxic, functional and art, universal and elitist all at once. It’s about how people can be one thing and a conflicting one at the same time. It’s about smooching people and touching their butts and finding out who has murdered a promising designer.

If you liked any of the following, I hope you’ll like Making the Cut:

  • Hatoful Boyfriend
  • Mystic Messenger
  • Zoolander
  • Project Runway
  • RuPaul’s Drag Race
  • Silence of the Lambs

Patreon is the best option for releasing the serialized story I have in mind, and thank GOD they rolled back their fee changes. Also like, this should go without saying but if you ever want to cosplay one of the MtC characters, by all means go for it and please share so I can squeal over it.

Okay But Back to Cosplay…

In cosplay-specific goals, 2018 will be about managing my health and productivity. I miss sewing, but I had to take a break from it due to the day-job’s increased workload and to shake off still-lingering negativity from the year before. My interests have grown and changed, and while I still like making the costumes, I’m not as interested in like… photos and so on.

So, one of my 2018 goals is to focus more on the design and development of costumes than the actual wearing of them. That means more pattern reviews, learning how to draft flat patterns, and ultimately sharing what I’ve learned with others either through panels, workshops or on the blog here.

If you’ve appreciated any of the content over the last 5 years, consider donating to my Ko-Fi to help allow me to focus on creative content instead of just the day job, which is boring and unfulfilling but also is what keeps me fed and warm. (For now.)

I resisted monetizing my hobbies for years, but I’m hoping to save up and take some time off the day job one day to focus on my health and creative brain and this will help me with that eventual goal. I don’t expect to make a profit, but maybe I’ll be able to make the hobbies break even one day. A girl can dream, after all…

I hope you all have wonderful holidays and here’s to making 2018 better than 2017.
